Chairman's Report

Welcome

It never gets any easier to write anything new about our Section without being in danger of repeating myself. But this year brings some new twists that will mean 'All Change' for next year!

Firstly, our venerable Secretary Phil 'Hoppy' Hopkins is stepping down after a Continuous (well, almost!) run of well over 20 years as our Secretary.

Hoppy was one of the Prime Movers as a founder of this Section getting on for 30 years ago and has served it like as if it were a Family member. We owe him dearly for his contribution and commitment over the years. A good friend once told me that a club should be viewed as a Money Box - You cannot take anything out if you haven't put anything in! Well I can tell you that Hoppy's deposits have been far greater than his withdrawals!

We also have an opportunity to introduce some new blood to the committee at this AGM and for the first time in a long while, we will not be accepting any proposals from the floor to reselect the Committee 'En Bloc'.

You should never under estimate the huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to fill our Calendar each year. The 'few' who do contribute willingly are committed to ensure that the 'many' can turn up and be 'entertained' every month. Or is it just the beer you come for? Whatever it is, our attendances remain constant and continue to be the envy of other Sections who get less than 20% of our turnout!

I should also like to ask you to take a moment to remember members of the VMCC, including this Section, who have left us during this past year and reflect on their contribution to the Club.

Our Secretary will shortly present his own report on our various happenings over the last 12 months in due course so I will close by adding just a few personal notes of thanks: -

I would like once again to offer my thanks for the generosity of members who have contributed in more ways than one! I would like to thank the Committee for their support; I would also like to thank those members who have trusted others with their cherished machinery to ride in special events. Those that have prepared and given talks, and last but by no means least, those who have helped raise the profile of this Section by getting us the reputation of being the by far the best provider of refreshments within the entire VMCC - The Ladies (and their helpers!)

Once again we thank you for supporting the section throughout the past year.

Chris Illman
Section Chairman.

Secretary's Report

14th December saw our Christmas festivities with Mince Pies all round our Raffle raised £140 for the Cheshire Home.

12th January Our first club night of the New Year brought in 83 members to hear a very interesting talk on magnetos from Dave Fisher of Northampton.

8th February saw just 17 people attend the video evening due to a light sprinkling of snow having fallen the night before.

8th March Our Intersection Team Quiz had a wonderful turn out, as we have come to expect. Sterling work in the supporting roles helped to bring in 15 teams with £99 raised in the raffle. The Anglian team won the competition, again without the presence of Mike Jackson.

12th April was the Fish and Chip Supper attended by 70 people. Our old friend the van man having retired meant that our chairman was reduced to queuing in the local chippie.

10th May we were visited by Roy Price who with his brother Stan in the sidecar, won the first ever ACU Sidecar Scrambles Championship. Roy showed us a great selection of pictures including many from events in Europe. Supported by his wife he recalled many interesting and amusing events.

24th May we made our Anti Social Run to the Green Man at Eversholt. 20 members attended this informal get together at a village Pub some still soggy from a wet ride in the 13th May Spring Run organised by Dave Watts. 130 miles in the Chilterns with no option on the free rain.

14th June was the ride a bike night to Shefford. Poor weather all day but still 60 people attended.

28th June was the barbeque run to Cranfield. Good food and good company gave us a good evening but indoors in the room.

8th July was the Albert Brown which will be reported on elsewhere.

12th July was our Car Park Concours won by Merv Kendall's 1140 Enfield V twin.

26th July we joined the AMOC at George and Anne Wrench's home for a social event.

9th August was the Tabletop sale but the Lada Manual did not appear!!

13th September was an evening with Will Curry talking about Handbooks and Manuals.

11th October we spent an evening touring the world vicariously with Bryan Marsh. That snow in Canada was too flaming deep for my liking.

Tonight I stand down from your committee. I will organise the 20th Intersection Team Quiz in March but this will be the last event run by the present organising team. Likewise the catering for that event will be the last done for us by Doreen as she, like us is becoming very tired as the years go by.

I would like to thank those section members who have helped me over the years to organise some great events for the club, who have dug deep in their own pockets to make this section a success for nearly 30 years. Little did I know all those years ago when I canvassed all the local VMCC members helped by Roger Mills and Bernard Ruff that we would have such a great section here all these years later.

I wiould like to take a moment to remember all those section members who have passed away over the Years. Geoff Richardson, Bill Price, Ormonde Gurr, Geoff Newbury, Dora Macbeth and so recently Mick Gutteridge to name but a few bless them all.

This section is bigger than me and that is mighty Big so its time for a new generation to step forward and take up the reins.

Best wishes to all our members past and present.
